Hello,

For 15 years I enjoyed a very successful career selling commercial cooking and refrigeration equipment service agreements to restaurant chains, hospitals, corporate cafeterias and hotels in the Chicago area. I left the industry for four years to start my own commercial property inspection business and did well for a while, but have since closed it due to recession.

I would like to return to the food service equipment industry as a manufacturer's rep. My question is, since I have proven industry knowledge and success is this a legitimate lateral career move?

Thank You,
Erol Kartal

Hello Erol,

Absolutely.  Your experience would suit you very well as a manufacturer's rep.  If you have any contacts from your previous 15 years in selling, that will help even more.  When you work as a manufacturer's rep, many companies will ask how many contacts you have in the industry.  The more you have the better.  Even without any contacts, your experience would seem to give you a leg up with manufacturers selling cooking, refrigeration, restaurant equipment, etc.

This is a tough economy and many businesses have closed, I am sorry to hear about yours.  This could be a perfect time for you to get started as a rep.  If you would like to research some related opportunities, check out the sales opportunities listed on Manufacturers Representatives.
Sincerely,
Walter Ryan
